Joss Whedon Is My Master Now

Serenity finally comes out this weekend. For those of you who are clueless, Serenity is a movie that is based off of a short lived Fox tv-show created by Joss Whedon. For those of you who are totally clueless, Joss Whedon is also the creator of cult hits Buffy the Vampire Slayer and Angel. Despite the stigma those two shows received, they were smart and at most times quite witty. Firefly droped much of the hoakiness associated with Joss's other works and created a brilliant vision of the future. Do you like cowboys? Of course you do. Do you like space? Of course you do. Well, this is Cowboys in space. Actually that sounds kind of cheesy seeing it typed like that...reminds me of Pigs in Space. Anyway, I promise you, the show was not hoaky. It portrayed a somewhat misfit band of space frontiersman trying to make their way in this future world. The main character, Mal, is one of my favorite characters ever. I'm about as big a fan of him as I am of Han Solo, who Mal is clearly based on.

This movie even coming out is somewhat of a miracle. The show got cancelled halfway through it's first season with several episodes never being broadcasted until the Sci-Fi network picked it up several years later. So how did this failed TV show manage to get itself a sweet budget to become a feature film. The answer is simple, the power of the almighty nerd herd. The fans of this show were fervent in their devotion to the show. The DVD of the show had outstanding sales. Fans spread browncoat fever (browncoats are the name of the Firefly/Serenity fandom) to their friends as they showed them the DVDs or spread the episodes via DivX. I myself only saw the show when I downloaded it from the famed NavidSM and even to that I only downloaded it because I had heard such good things from an ex. In any case, all this attention and hype that the cancelled show received gave it enough cred for Joss to be able to make the movie.

It's awesome, and I'll probably be coming to Princeton friday night in order to see it with Jordan. Let me know if you want to come.

Have no place I can be since I found Serenity.
But you can't take the sky from me.
