Pre-Child Endangerment

I came upon this picture the other day. The amount of shock I experienced was quite enormous. In case you didn't pick up on the terribly sad irony of this picture. The picture of the pregnant woman smoking says that she "worries about the effect on her unborn child from the sound of jackhammers." How is it even possible that she can stand there and be concerned for her baby being affected by something so not likely to affect it, WHILE SHE IS SMOKING A CIGARETTE. In discussing this picture with a few interesting responses. One was from a current med student saying that this was essentially the reason that he'll almost definitely not go into private practice, people just ignore everything you tell them. Another told me that she was serving Zinfandel to a couple when then man said "we're celebrating with pink wine because we found out it's a girl." Why would people take a chance with their children? These are things that you do over 9 months which will dramatically alter your child for the ENTIRETY OF IT'S LIFE.

To clarify....

I didn't say I wouldn't go into private practice. I said that I wouldn't go into primary care practice. These are the docs who see patients, and often can't really do too much for them because they refuse to quit smoking/go on a diet/exercise more/whatever.

As of right now I am actually leaning towards private practice, just in a specialized field.
